I am sorry to tell you, but there are no rules that tell you when you have to use der die or das.
Every noun has the article der, die OR das.
You have to learn it with every noun you learn

hi,
der- can be used when the word belongs to masculine gender.
die- can be used when the word belongs to feminine gender.
das- can be used to when the word belongs to neuter gender.

There are certain rules. It is not as confusing as you might think.
Die for example words ending in "ung".
The list is rather extensive.
Suggest you obtain a copy of "Hammer's German Grammar and Usage". An outstanding book.

As I've read in other sites to learn german there are no rules and you must learn word by word. If you speak any latin lenguage (italian, french, spanish...) it could help you to understand the way to use "die" and "der" but nothing about "das".

hey guys!
Ireally think that it would be best to simply learn the gender of the words while learning vocabulary.
