History: Die Wiener Klassik
What we call the 'Wiener Klassik' in German includes the three probably most
famous Austrian and German composers of the 18th and 19th centuries, who all mainly lived
and worked in Vienna (Wien): Those are Joseph Haydn (1732-1809),
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) and Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827).
The "classical" style of music that was developed by these three artists was influenced at least partly by
the revolutionary events and the 'Zeitgeist' of this epoch (French Revolution, American Independence).
Both the old and the new continent were shattered to their cores by these incidents.
The "Klassische Musik" managed to separate itself from the churchly influences that had shaped the Baroque Music
in the 17th century and rather tried to sound pleasant and earthly. Famous musical forms such as the
symphony, the solo concert or the sonata were "invented" and developed in the classical era of music.
